Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase turned some heads recently with comments about his usage.
But for the Bengals and coaches like offensive coordinator Brian Callahan, it was a case of Ja’Marr just being Ja’Marr amid a little frustration at the team’s 0-2 start.
“I think sometimes Ja’Marr talks and it just comes out of his mouth,” Callahan said, according to CLNS Media’s Mike Petraglia. “He’s frustrated because his production isn’t what he’s accustomed to… I don’t have any problem with him being frustrated.”
That’s a roundabout way of saying they don’t mind Chase’s frustration and probably also a nod to the fact Chase gets in front of reporters sometimes and has a little too much fun, be it the “Pat Who?” comments or recent jawing with the Browns (Elves?).
In this instance, Chase’s commentary got a little blown out of proportion too. He wants more targets deep down the field, yes, but most of the buzz about his comments neglected to mention his explanation that it would open up more routes underneath and help the offense, too.
Whether Chase and even Callahan get some relief in this regard mostly hinges on the health of quarterback Joe Burrow, who remains a question mark for Monday’s game against the Rams.
