Last season the Miami Dolphins had some real problems with the health of their offensive line.
Left tackle Terron Armstead, left guard Liam Eichenberg and right tackle Austin Jackson were all dealing with injuries and missed games throughout the year.
This caused Miami to sign some veterans for depth purposes, including Geron Christian, who they claimed off of waivers in January. While he never played a snap for the Dolphins in 2022, when he hit free agency this year, it was the aqua and orange who brought him back.
According to Over the Cap, Christian and the Dolphins agreed to a one-year deal worth $1.23 million. He’ll make $1.08 million in base salary ($200,000 of which is guaranteed) as well as $152,500 in a signing bonus. His cap hit for 2023 is set to be $1.09 million.
Jackson hasn’t done enough to be given the right tackle job, so Christian could technically fight for that spot. However, he’s never been a consistent starter during his five-year career. It’s much more likely that he’ll be battling for a depth role.
Christian’s contract far from guarantees him a spot on the roster. If Miami were to cut him prior to the season, they could save $740,000 while having a dead cap hit of just $352,500.
Unless the Dolphins find a legitimate starter to protect Tua Tagovailoa’s blind side, anything is possible with the offensive tackles that are currently on the roster.
