Breaking down the incentives in Dolphins QB Mike White’s contract

It’s unlikely that he hits all of them.

Entering this offseason, the Miami Dolphins had a clear plan to upgrade their backup quarterback position after Teddy Bridgewater failed to live up to expectations in the role in 2022.

General manager Chris Grier inked former New York Jets backup Mike White to a two-year deal worth $8 million. However, White also has the opportunity to earn an extra $4 million annually in incentives if he gets legitimate playing time throughout the year, according to The33rdTeam’s Ari Meirov.

If White plays 50% of Miami’s offensive snaps, and the team finishes top 27 in offensive points scored, he’ll earn $250,000. He’ll earn an additional $250,000 for 60%, 70% and 80% of offensive snaps played with the same points-scored stipulation.

White can also earn an additional $250,000 at each of those playtime levels (50%, 60%, 70% and 80%) if the team is top 27 in offensive points scored and makes the postseason.

Another $250,000 can be earned in each round of the playoffs that the Dolphins win that White plays over 50% of the snaps in the game.

With the quarterback being under contract for 2024 as well, the same incentives can be earned next year. Tua Tagovailoa’s health has been a question since he entered the league, so there’s a real chance that White can earn some of these.
