Breaking down the Houston Texans’ future draft picks after so many trades

A look at the future for a team that’s mortgaged a lot of it.

Houston Texans head coach and general manager Bill O’Brien made yet another trade that gave away draft picks for talent (this time, it was for receiver Brandin Cooks), which seems a bit strange when you consider one of those trades involved DeAndre Hopkins.

Dealing away so many picks would make sense if you’re going all in. But the Texans still have holes, and the Hopkins trade was a disaster.

We’ve been over that. This post is to focus on all the draft picks they have left in the next couple of years, a sort of opposite of what we’ve done compiling the Miami Dolphins’ and Jacksonville Jaguars’ big hauls.

Let’s break down what they’ve traded away and what they have left:

2020 Draft

1st round: None

The trade for Laremy Tunsil and Kenny Stills sent back the first of two (!) first-rounders to the Fins.

2nd round: The Cardinals’ pick

They just sent their own pick to the Rams for Cooks. They got back the Cards’ second-rounder in the Hopkins deal.

3nd round: Their own pick

I’m a bit confused, but I think I’ve got this: they acquired a third-rounder from the Seahawks in the Jadeveon Clowney deal and turned around to trade that to the Raiders for Gareon Conley. The Browns get the Texans’ third-round compensatory pick because of the Duke Johnson trade.

4th round: The Dolphins’ pick

They got the Fins’ pick in the Tunsil/Stills trade. Their own fourth-rounder went to the Cards.

5th round: Their own pick

6th round: None

The Patriots own this pick after the Keion Crossen trade.

7th round: Three of their own picks

Two of them are compensatory selections.

2021 Draft

1st round: None

Again: the Tunsil/Stills trade. Yow.

2nd round: None

ONCE AGAIN: they traded two firsts and a second in that Dolphins deal. Woof.

3rd round: Their own

Whew.

4th round: Their own pick and the Cardinals’ pick

Thanks, Hopkins deal.

5th round: Their own pick

6th round: Their own pick and the Dolphins’ pick

Oh, thank goodness they got SOMETHING back from Miami (sarcasm font!).

7th round: Their own pick
