Breaking down former Texas QB Casey Thompson’s top five schools

Casey Thompson may be running out of options.

It was no surprise that former Texas quarterback, Casey Thompson, decided to enter his name into the transfer portal for good this time.

After losing the starting job to Hudson Card at the beginning of the season, and winning it back just three weeks in, Thompson and the team went on two separate stretches during the season. The first stretch saw him lead the Longhorns to three consecutive wins along with throwing for five touchdowns in the dismantling of Texas Tech.

The second stretch saw Thompson and Texas blow Oklahoma out in the first half of the game, but would eventually blow their 20-point first half lead and lose. Thompson injured his throwing hand during this game, but still played well throwing for five touchdowns and 388 yards.

However, after the loss to the Sooners, Thompson and Texas were never the same. They went on to lose their next five games for a grand total of a six-game losing streak. Thompson himself was clearly battling his hand injury, and his throws seemed to have lost a little zip. He and Texas lost all momentum and swagger that they had developed in the first half of the Red River Showdown.

The season ended with him getting pulled multiple times due to poor play, and this offseason Texas was able to add quarterback prodigy Quinn Ewers, who is likely the starter going into next season.

While Thompson did wait his turn behind Sam Ehlinger, he does not have much time left as a college quarterback, so he understandably wants to go somewhere he can start right away.

His father, Charles Thompson, announced his top five schools on Wednesday, but his decision has likely already been narrowed down due to other movements within the portal.

Here is a breakdown of his top schools and why some are more likely than others.
