This one feels like it certainly deserves a QUACK.
On Thursday afternoon, Dana Altman and the Oregon Ducks men’s basketball team scored a massive recruiting win, landing the commitment of 5-star small forward Marquis ‘Mookie’ Cook, a player from Compass Prep in Chandler, Arizona.
Cook, who is rated by 247Sports as the No. 4 overall player in the 2023 recruiting class, chose to come to Oregon over the Gonzaga Bulldogs and Kentucky Wildcats.
A chance to play in Eugene is important for Cook, who is a native of Portland, Oregon. At 6-foot-7, 200 pounds, Cook rates as the No. 2 SF in the nation, and No. 1 player in the state of Arizona.
This is just the second member of Oregon’s 2023 recruiting class, where West Linn’s Jackson Shelstad stood as the lone member until Thursday. Shelstad is a 6-foot point guard who is ranked as a 4-star player, the No. 1 prospect in the state of Oregon.
The 2023 recruiting year is still very young, but the addition of Cook boosts Oregon up to No. 2 in the national ranking, ahead of teams like Arizona, Purdue, North Carolina, and Kentucky. They only trail the Duke Blue Devils at this point. This is coming off of a year where the Ducks finished No. 15 in the 2022 recruiting rankings, adding 5-star C Kel’el Ware and 5-star PG Dior Johnson.
