B/R labels Bills’ deal for Stefon Diggs ‘risky’

Buffalo Bills riskiest move of 2020 offseason was trading for WR Stefon Diggs says Bleacher Report.

The Bills gave up a lot for wide receiver Stefon Diggs in a trade with the Vikings. Among the slew of picks sent out for Diggs was a first-round pick.

Because of this, the Diggs deal was tabbed by Bleacher Report as the “riskiest” move by the Bills this offseason. But B/R laid out some potential concerns in regard to the move:

The Buffalo Bills had a very good offseason in 2020, one that potentially sets the team up as the favorites in the AFC East. The centerpiece of that offseason was the trade that brought Stefon Diggs to western New York and sent Buffalo’s 2020 first-, fifth and sixth-round picks and a 2021 fourth-rounder to the Twin Cities.

To be clear, calling this move Buffalo’s riskiest of the offseason doesn’t mean it was a bad idea. Diggs gives the team a true No. 1 receiver. Coupled with John Brown and Cole Beasley, the Bills have now quietly assembled a solid trio of pass-catchers for Josh Allen.

But even good ideas carry risk. Bringing Diggs in cost the Bills a substantial amount of draft capital and well over $10 million in salary. It also changes the offensive dynamic in Buffalo by adding a player who has been known to voice his displeasure when his role in said offense doesn’t meet his expectations.

Diggs’ addition most likely makes the Bills a better football team offensively, but it’s not a certainty.

Truthfully the riskiest part of all the “risks” listed by B/R might be the off-field issues with Diggs. So far, so good. Allen has gone on the record to tout how good of a teammate Diggs has been to this point. However, we have to consider the biggest elephant in the room: These who still haven’t suited up as teammates just yet. That’s what caused Diggs’s problems with the Vikings. Assuming Allen and Diggs being on the same page is one thing, it happening is another, but at this point, there’s no reason to think that won’t happen.

In regard to Diggs’ cost, it’s really not that bad. Buffalo gave up a costly first-round pick, but the others? Rolls of the dice. In addition, $10 million for a No.1 receiver? Truthfully not that bad at all. Sign up for that.
