For just a second, it looked like Boston Celtics point guard Derrick White‘s streak of games with a block was going to continue against San Antonio Spurs big man phenom Victor Wembanyama in spectacular fashion as the Colorado native pursued Wemby downcourt in search of a chasedown stuff from behind.
Then, the Wembanyama effect took over. The 7-foot-4 Frenchman simply raised the ball over his head and near a dozen feet into the air beyond the reach of White before depositing it in the cup. Asked why he abandoned the attempt at a shot block postgame via Heavy’s Mike Thomas, the Colorado alum jokingly replied “I’m not an idiot.”
“I was hoping he would take another dribble, but he just picked it up, and I never saw it again,” he added. “I was just trying to get out of the way. I assumed he was going to take one more dribble, but that was crazy.”
