Boston Red Sox at New York Yankees Game 1 odds, picks and prediction

Analyzing Tuesday’s Boston Red Sox at New York Yankees Game 1 odds and lines, with MLB picks and predictions.

The Boston Red Sox (69-51) and New York Yankees (66-52) renew their ancient rivalry with a three-game series at Yankee Stadium. That set gets underway Tuesday at 1:05 p.m. ET with Game 1 of a day-night doubleheader. Let’s analyze the lines around the Red Sox vs. Yankees odds with MLB picks and predictions.

RHP Tanner Houck is the projected starting pitcher for the Red Sox. He is 0-3 with a 2.93 ERA, 1.14 WHIP, 12.9 K/9 and 2.1 BB/9 through 30 2/3 IP spanning six starts and two relief appearances.

  • Allowed 4 runs (3 earned) on 6 hits across 5 IP against the Tampa Bay Rays Thursday. Had posted a 1.17 ERA over his four previous second-half outings. That stretch began with two games against these Yankees, one in relief and one as a starter. Logged 7 2/3 combined IP in those efforts.
  • Has pitched around a .356 batting average on balls in play.

LHP Jordan Montgomery is the projected starter for the Yankees. He is 4-5 with a 3.69 ERA, 1.19 WHIP, 9.0 K/9 and 2.8 BB/9 across 114 2/3 IP over 21 starts.

  • Returning from the COVID-19 list; last started Aug. 1.
  • Allowed just 1 ER over his last 3 starts (15 2/3 IP). That stretch began with 5 2/3 scoreless innings against the Red Sox July 22. Has held current Boston batters to a .639 OPS and .094 isolated power over his career.

Red Sox 4, Yankees 3

Money line (ML)

The ball club nicknamed the Bronx Bombers has pitched its way back into the legitimate AL playoff race over recent weeks. The Yankees enter Tuesday’s twin bill with a three-game winning streak in tow and they are 13-4 since July 30. New York hurlers have combined to log a 2.82 ERA over that span.

However, New York is just 3-4 since the All-Star break against a Red Sox club that has had its number all season. The Red Sox are 10-3 with a plus-18 run differential in the head-to-head season series. The Crimson Hose have stumbled of late against other opponents and they are 6-11 over their last 17 games.

That’s despite a three-game sweep of the Baltimore Orioles over the weekend.

With Houck on the mound and Montgomery returning from the COVID-19 list, the Red Sox are worthy of being road favorites. Bet RED SOX (+100).

Run line/Against the spread (ATS)

New York has played a lot of 1- and 2-run games, and even from a lead, their not-at-full-efficiency bullpen has been capable of dragging them into 1- and 2-run setbacks. The Yanks of August have been a solid club: better but not great on offense, but also a more diverse one with more balance and athleticism since the trade deadline.

A third look at Houck figures to go better. PASS and stick with the Red Sox for the win.

Over/Under (O/U)

The 7-inning game structure has this total below 8, and the pitching that sets up for the front half of the doubleheader will be full of strong options on both sides. With a slight lean on going lower still, TAKE THE UNDER 7.5 (-135).
