Bobby Wagner: Lots of room for improvement on Seahawks defense

Seahawks linebacker Bobby Wagner appeared on ESPN’s First Take on Wednesday, praising Russell Wilson but criticizing Seattle’s defense.

Seattle Seahawks linebacker Bobby Wagner appeared on ESPN’s First Take on Wednesday and expressed confidence in the Seattle Seahawks’ chances to emerge as contenders in 2020.

Wagner specifically heaped praise on quarterback Russell Wilson, calling him one of the best signal-callers in the game today.

“I feel really confident,” Wagner said. “Obviously, Russell is an amazing quarterback; the things that he does on the field are just amazing. Like you said, he’s one of the greatest quarterbacks in our game.”

However, Wagner stated that the defensive unit needs to improve, a sentiment shared by Seahawks fans and coaches alike.

“We’re confident on that side,” Wagner said. “I feel like from the defensive standpoint, there’s a lot of room for improvement. We have to play a little bit better. I feel like if we make those changes and make those improvements, I still feel like we’ll be the team to beat.”

In 2019, Seattle ranked No. 26 in total defense and was second to last in sacks in the NFL, even with Jadeveon Clowney. In addition, the Seahawks have not made any big splashes in free agency on either side of the ball this offseason and Clowney may very well sign with another team.

The Seahawks will have to prove they can persevere in the face of adversity yet again for the 2020 season.
