The return of Bob Stoops to the sideline was met with defeat.

Oklahoma’s legendary coach was the poster boy for the revival of the XFL when it was announced that Stoops would be the head coach of the XFL Dallas team. The Dallas Renegades were 9.5-point favorites heading into their debut against the St. Louis BattleHawks, but fell short in a 15-9 loss.

Stoops’ team took an early lead in the first-quarter after a field goal. The Renegades’ offense sputtered for much of the game, though, with them failing to score a single touchdown. After half, Dallas kicked another field goal to take a 9-6 lead. The Renegades then gave up a touchdown and a field goal in the fourth-quarter without answering with a score themselves to put themselves away.

Former Oklahoma receiver Jeff Badet had a slow day, catching only three passes for six yards. Frank Alexander, who played for Stoops from 2008-11, registered the first official sack in Renegades history. He finished with five total tackles on the day.

Landry Jones did not play against the BattleHawks, but during the broadcast, Jones said he is cleared and going to try and give it a go in week two.

The Dallas Renegades play at the Los Angeles Wildcats at 2 p.m. CT on ABC on Feb. 16.
