Blake Bell leaves Cowboys, reunites with Chiefs on one-year deal

Blake Bell is heading back to the Kansas City Chiefs after one season with the Dallas Cowboys. He was primarily used as a blocker in 2020.

Tight end Blake Bell won Super Bowl LIV with the Kansas City Chiefs in 2019 as their TE2 to Travis Kelce. He signed with the Dallas Cowboys last March to play behind Blake Jarwin and Dalton Schultz, giving them solid depth at the tight end position.

Nearly a year to the day after he came to America’s Team, Bell is on his way back to the Chiefs on a one-year deal after passing a physical.

Bell played a pivotal role last season after Jarwin suffered a torn ACL. His 359 offensive snaps were the second-most of his career. His snaps were primarily as a blocker but that came in handy with the Cowboys’ issues along the offensive line. He would only catch 11 passes for 110 yardson the season but did contribute 163 special teams snaps as well.

Jarwin will be the Cowboys’ top tight end in 2021 and will look to rekindle the magic from the 2018 season. He caught seven passes for 119 yards and three touchdowns in the Cowboys season finale in 2018 before the brief return of Jason Witten and last season’s injury derailed his progress.

Schultz filled in nicely in Jarwin’s absence with 63 receptions for 615 yards and four touchdowns last season and will resume his backup duties as the blocking tight end. Sean McKeon, an undrafted rookie in 2020, will look to earn Bell’s TE3/blocker role.

Although Bell is a loss at the tight end spot the Cowboys should have more than adequate pieces to make up for it.
