The Buffalo Bills are working out an interesting name, according to the NFL’s transaction wire on Monday. According to the list, former first-round pick of the Jets in Darron Lee will have a workout with the Bills.
Lee, 25, still has plenty of youth on his side. The Jets made him the No. 20 overall pick at the 2016 draft. However, Lee would certainly be a project piece for the Bills. Lee had the oft-coveted fifth-year option on his rookie contract decline by Gang Green and he eventually made his way to Kansas City. Lee was pretty much the defensive LeSean McCoy for the Super Bowl champs in 2019. The Chiefs gave Shady and Lee chances, and eventually they had their roles reduced and they were inactive when the team won their title last year.
While he’s had lows in his career clearly since he’s a former first rounder that’s a free agent, Lee has also had some highs with the Jets. The former first-round pick is a solid coverage linebacker and plays special teams, that could help replace some of Lorenzo Alexander’s various roles that he played with the Bills.
In that regard, Lee, if signed, would provide further training camp competition for a job with the likes of Vosean Joseph.
A fifth-round pick of the Bills in 2019, Joseph missed his entire rookie season in Buffalo last year with a shoulder injury. He’s never suited up in a regular season game, however, he did take part in the Bills’ preseason a year ago, so he does have some game experience, but certainly not as much as Lee. Signing Lee could be a short-term type of investment for the Bills… the ol’ “prove-it” deal.
After making 36 starts in 40 appearances with the Jets from 2016-2018, he only made two starts with the Chiefs last year. For his career, Lee has three interceptions, 11 passes defended two forced fumbles and four sacks.
