The Buffalo Bills do not give much away when the faces of their franchise are talking.
Two of those, head coach Sean McDermott and general manager Brandon Beane, very much showed their hand for once at the 2022 NFL combine.
Where will Bills quarterback Mitchell Trubisky be playing in 2022?
Probably not Buffalo… At least if McDermott’s and Beane’s predictions are correct.
Both sounded very certain that Trubisky, who signed a one-year deal with the Bills last offseason, would be moving on for a better opportunity when free agency begins on March 14.
“I feel sure he’s going to get a good opportunity to at least compete for a starting job this year,” Beane said.
“Really enjoyed our time with Mitch. Class act,” McDermott added. “When given the opportunity to play, whether it was the preseason or regular season, he did a phenomenal job. Command of the playbook. He’s– I think it’s unrealistic to think we’re going to have him back.”
Both do have good points. Not only is Trubisky a capable player himself who had a tough start to his career with the Chicago Bears, the upcoming QB class at the 2022 draft isn’t anything great. It’s a good time for Trubisky to hit the market.
Now attention turns toward what happens next.
With a quarterback like Josh Allen, he’s going to take hits. That’s the reason Buffalo brought in Trubisky in the first place.
On field play is one thing, but McDermott noted that off of it is just as important. The Bills need someone who will mesh.
“You want to find the right pieces that fit with Josh. Even though we know who Josh is and Josh is older and more experienced now, that dynamic in that room with the coach and also the other players in that room is critical,” McDermott said.
From the sounds of it, a veteran backup might be the route the Bills take once again.
Options are interesting there.
A few of them include former fan favorite Ryan Fitzpatrick… and another… fan favorite–for a totally different reasoning, Andy Dalton.
