Buffalo Bills head coach Sean McDermott has admitted to making a comparison between team communication and the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks following a feature which noted the coach had done so.
In the first part of a three-part feature from GoLongTD.com, the coach had several anonymous sources question McDermott’s leadership by using words such as “fraud” and comments that the coach “never takes accountability.”
However, the strangest part of the piece was a story which stated he used a reference to the Sept. 11 attacks during a team meeting. According to the feature, McDermott asked, “What tactics do you think [the terrorists] used to come together?”
It’s important to note that McDermott also had sources speak positively of how he coaches… but it was undoubtedly an uncomfortable connection made… and it turned out that McDermott did comment on the feature.
Via video conference on Thursday, McDermott admitted to making the remark.
“My intent in the meeting that day was to discuss the importance of communication,” McDermott said.”I regretted mentioning 9/11 in my message and I immediately apologized to the team.”
For McDermott’s extended reflection, see the attached WKBW-TV clip below:
