The Buffalo Bills announced on Wednesday that they’re giving Leslie Frazier a bit of a status upgrade.
Frazier, the team’s defensive coordinator, had another title to his job description: assistant head coach. Per a release from the team, Frazier will now be considered defensive coordinator/ assistant head coach. The Bills have done this type of dual-job title in the past.
In addition, the Bills have announced four other assistant coach changes & promotions as well:

The most intriguing of that bunch is Marc Lubick as “game management.” It’s not an often tabbed title for an NFL coach and leaves a bit of a grey area. However, Buffalo head coach Sean McDermott has struggled with clock management and challenges during his time with the club, so one could speculate that the job description has to do with that.
Back to Frazier, his title bump also likely comes with a nicer paycheck. He was not reportedly interviewed for any vacant head coaching positions this past offseason as offensive coordinator Brian Daboll was, but his name is thrown around in speculation. A few more dollars and well-deserved respect will certainly be appreciated by the 60-year-old assistant. The Bills defense has sat at the top of the NFL since McDermott and Frazier joined the Bills in 2017.
Frazier previously was the Vikings head coach from 2010-2013.
“I just appreciate that our ownership along with our head coach felt the desire to put that title next to my name. Just very appreciative, Frazier told the team’s website.
McDermott has previously stated he wanted to bring Frazier on in his coaching staff a few years back because of his prior experience leading an NFL franchise. With plenty of experience for McDermott now three years into his own job, keeping Frazier around is now more of a… if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it deal. And boy is it working for the Bills defense having Frazier around.
“His fingerprints are all over our operation and I’m extremely grateful for all the years we have worked together,” McDermott said via a release. “Leslie’s impact on our team is felt every day.”
While the Bills’ defensive system is McDermott’s, for a majority of their time in Buffalo, Frazier has been the defensive play-caller as well.
