The Buffalo Bills made an expected move official on Wednesday evening per ESPN’s Field Yates.
The Bills have picked up the fifth-year option on cornerback Tre’Davious White’s contract. He was entering the final year of that deal in 2020, but now is under contract until 2021.
Last season saw White earn his first All-Pro honors in his career, but he’s out-played his No. 27 overall pick status in the 2017 NFL Draft each season he’s been a member of the Bills. White arguably should have alread earned national honors such as a Pro Bowl prior to last season.
White has played in every game in his three-year career with the Bills, except for the season finale in 2019 when the team had already clinched a playoff berth. In those 47 games played, he’s defended 43 passes, forced three fumbles, while intercepting 12 passes. In 2019 alone, White led the NFL with six interceptions.
The 25-year-old will make approximately $10 million in 2021 under that option, but he’s in-line to make another pretty penny in his next contract. The last time the bills flexed a fifth-yea option was another cornerback, 2012 first-round pick Stephon Gilmore.
With White locked up, following the NFL Draft this week the Bills can now turn their attention to the likes of Matt Milano and Dion Dawkins. The linebacker and offensive linemen were also 2017 draft picks, but were not first-round picks. Therefore the Bills don’t have fifth-year options they can flex on their deals, so the Bills will try to sign them to long-term extensions first.
The Bills traded back from the No. 10 overall pick to the No. 27 pick in 2017 and took White. He was the first draft pick under current Bills head coach Sean McDermott.
