Bills only name two team captains for the 2024 NFL season

One you’ll know already:

The Buffalo Bills have named their team captains for the 2024 NFL season.

One was not a surprise, the other is new, and that being the end of the list is a bit of a surprise in itself.

Last season, head coach Sean McDermott had eight total captains for the team that has 53 players on it plus a practice squad. This upcoming year there will only be two:

  • Quarterback Josh Allen
  • Linebacker Terrel Bernard

Of the eight captains last year, only Allen remains as one. Bernard was in his first season starting for the Bills defense in 2023 and had not yet been named one.

Among the 2023 leaders, six are no longer on the team. The Bills released center Mitch Morse and safety Jordan Poyer. Wide receiver Gabe Davis agreed to a big deal with the Jacksonville Jaguars while linebacker Tyler Matakevich ended up back with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

The other is safety Micah Hyde. He is considering retirement and has not yet officially decided his future as he remains a free agent.

That leaves us with only five names.

The final 2023 captain is still on the team: Pass rusher Von Miller. It’s unclear what Miller’s role will be in 2024 as he’s now two years removed from a serious ACL injury so that could be playing a role in him not getting a “C.”

However, McDermott said via video conference on Wednesday that Allen and Bernard will have a type of “leadership council” alongside them. Miller is likely involved with that, which McDermott said would include 10 total players.
