Bills offensive coordinator Brian Daboll wins Assistant Coach of the Year

Buffalo Bills’ Brian Daboll wins assistant coach of the year award for 2020 NFL season.

Bills offensive coordinator Brian Daboll was named the AP Assistant Coach of the Year on Saturday at the NFL Honors.

Daboll was expected to be a hot name for head coaching hires this offseason but was overlooked. Still, Daboll dominated the voting, beating Rams assistant head coach Brandon Staley who had 5.5 votes for the award, who came in second place in voting. Daboll had 28 of 50 votes.

Staley landed the Chargers head coaching gig this offseason.

Daboll’s honor comes as the Bills offense finished second in both scoring, averaging 31.3 points per game and yards per game with 396.4. Buffalo was also the best team on third down during the regular season, converting on 49.7 percent of their chances.

The award also goes hand-in-hand with quarterback Josh Allen’s emergence. Allen ended up finishing second in MVP voting on Saturday himself.

Daboll interviewed for head coaching vacancies with the Jets and the Chargers since the season ended and both opted for hiring defensive coordinators.
