It’s been a tough rookie year for Kaiir Elam.
The Bills’ first-round rookie in 2022, Elam has not consistently seen the first in his first pro season.
At times, he’s been inactive. When he gets on the field, it’s shown some inconsistencies.
At this point as the Bills (11-3) head into a Week 16 matchup with the Bears (3-11), Elam says he’s just trying to stock positives.
In order to do that, Elam said previously he was trying to do too much. Now, it’s back to basics and back to just playing ball.
“I wouldn’t say [putting] too much pressure on myself, just too much expectation,” Elam said. “I don’t know, now, I’m just playing.”
Elam has rotated in and out of the lineup in a rotation with sixth-round rookie Christian Benford, and Dane Jackson. Against the Dolphins last week, Jackson and Elam had a rotation while Benford remains on injured reserve.
But there were positives to be found. Even head coach Sean McDermott said so.
“Both guys were doing some good things out there. So, it was a good ebb and flow during the game there,” McDermott said postgame.
Heading into the Bears clash, it remains to be seen how much McDermott decides to put Elam on the field. If Elam can find some consistent form heading into the stretch run with the raw talent he has as a first-round pick, that would be a welcomed addition to the Bills defense.
