The Bills are going to play an extra game in 2021. The Washington Football Team was added to Buffalo’s schedule recently as the added 17th game was approved by NFL owners.
Notably, Saints All-Pro running back Alvin Kamara turned some heads with his thoughts on the increased workload. He didn’t hold back on his social media account via Twitter.
“S— dumb as hell,” Kamara said on March 28.
Just this week, Bills quarterback Josh Allen gave his feelings on the matter as well while appearing on The Ringer’s “10 Questions” podcast with Kyle Brandt.
Most of the attention in regard to the added game involves player safety. However, what first came to Allen’s mind were the numbers.
“I got mixed emotions on that as well. You change the complexity of the game as far as statistics and trying to… you know, now we have an extra game every year to develop more passing yards, more touchdowns so in there lies records being broken, but at the same time, I see that as like, ‘OK, it’s a chance for me to go out there and do that,'” Allen said. “It’s tough, but at the same time it’s an opportunity to go out there and play another game of football which is what I love to do.”
Honorable for him want to beat records the old-fashioned way, but Allen did keep the health of players in mind eventually. The QB did not have a super high level concern as compared to some others.
“You can get hurt at any point, whether it’s a game or whether it’s off the field or it’s getting up off your couch, stuff happens. I see it as another opportunity to play another game that I love and a chance to go out there and put up some more numbers and win some more games,” Allen said.
While perhaps a bit controversial, it’s not as if that feeling wasn’t shared. The addition of a 17th game wasn’t just approved by owners. The league’s CBA was agreed upon between ownership and the players’ union last year. The NFLPA previously signed off on adding it, so Allen’s not alone.
