The Buffalo Bills are reporting to training camp in just a few hours. The Bills, along with 29 other teams, have their “start date” for training camp on Tuesday.
But it’s actually going to be a pretty long time still until the Bills get on the field in pads.
The NFL and NFLPA reached an agreement on how they will adjust the Collective Bargaining Agreement due to COVID-19 last week. One of the issues that were included with those adjustments were each team’s practice schedule. Those details have now emerged.
According to MMQB’s Albert Breer, the Bills won’t starting hitting each other until August 17. That’s 21 days into this year’s modified training camp.
Here’s the full breakdown on camp via Breer:
Per sources, camp timeline in the NFL's proposal …
Day 1: Testing/virtual meetings.
Days 2-3: Virtual meetings.
Day 4: Testing/virtual meetings.
Days 5-6: Physicals.
Days 7-15: Strength and conditioning (with a day off.)
Day 16: Practice starts.
Day 21: First padded practice.— Albert Breer (@AlbertBreer) July 24, 2020
In total, NFL teams will reportedly have 14 padded practices before the season opens. Buffalo’s first game is September 13, at home, against the Jets. Those practices will be all-important, though. Also included all these adjustments? No preseason games. So that Bills vs. Jets game is going to be for all the marbles.
We’re approaching some uncharted territory here, but the Bills are going through the same thing every team is, so Buffalo head coach Sean McDermott won’t use it as an excuse.
