Buffalo Bills offensive lineman Dion Dawkins had some ups and downs against the New York Jets.
In the tight 20-12 win for the Bills (10-3), Dawkins laid a fantastic block on the rushing touchdown from quarterback Josh Allen.
But Dawkins was flagged for four penalties. Not the type of day a team wants from their franchise left tackle.
After defeating the Jets (7-6), Dawkins was none too happy about some of the calls.
“I mean, really, it’s getting harder and harder to play offensive line in this league,” Dawkins told the Buffalo News. “With the guys that are coming against us on the defense, and then from us not being able to use our strengths. They call calls when guys are falling down. It’s frustrating, but I’m one of those guys now – not that I don’t care, but I flush it so fast now.”
Four flags on one player is a lot, and yes it’s important Dawkins has a short memory when it comes to miscues. However, even Buffalo head coach Sean McDermott admitted that there are things for his team to clean up.
Nothing was mentioned directly. Dawkins’ penalties, including the five total the Bills had as a team, is certainly part of that.
“We’ve just got to be better fundamentally,” McDermott said via video conference.
With the postseason still over a month away, there is plenty of time for the Bills to correct such mistakes.
Even so, sooner is better than later.
