Change is finally coming for the New England Patriots, according to a new report from NBC Sports Boston’s Tom E. Curran.
The annual end-of-season meeting between coach Bill Belichick and owner Robert Kraft took place this week with hopes of the two sides talking over the direction of the team, after missing the playoffs for the second time in three seasons.
It was a meeting that followed the Krafts—Robert and his son, Jonathan—sending out a letter to season ticket holders, assuring they weren’t happy with the way the season ended, and “critical evaluations” would be coming.
Well, it doesn’t seem like they were bluffing.
Belichick will reportedly be making “offensive coaching reassignments” after the meeting. It would seem as if the coach recognizes serious changes need to be made, and he was open to making them for the team.
Curran wrote:
“Don’t expect a dog-and-pony show announcing firings or who’s coming in for an interview. Belichick isn’t going to put anyone’s head on a spike for the pleasure of the masses. But my understanding is offensive coaching reassignments are going to happen and several offensive coaches are under consideration for the Patriots’ 2023 staff.”
A competent offense could have done wonders for the Patriots in a year where the defense looked Super Bowl-caliber at times. The right moves could put the Patriots in a position to hit the retry button in 2023.
But it all starts with the offensive play-caller.
