Inauguration day 2021 was a historic moment in many ways. The nation swore in Kamala Harris, its first Black and South Asian female Vice President. Amanda Gorman, 22, became the youngest poet ever to read at an Inauguration. Joe Biden took office as the 46th President of the United States, marking a peaceful transition of power that, honestly, was looking a little dicey.
It was a huge day of big world events, so of course the one thing the internet latched on to most was this incredible picture of Senator Bernie Sanders sitting huddled in his Inauguration chair.
The coat. The mittens. The classic Bernie scowl evident even under the mask. Sanders quickly became a meme, spreading like internet wildfire. Well, turns out, Sanders has seen the memes and they also made him laugh.

“I was just sitting there. Trying to keep warm. Trying to pay attention to what was going on,” he told Seth Myers on Thursday.
He said he had seen the memes, shown to him by his staff, and then let out a very Bernie-like chuckle. One thing he still wont share is what was in the envelope he was carrying, calling it “top secret.”
In true Bernie fashion, meme talk lasted only a few seconds, before Sanders went on to talk about free health care.
