The Chicago Bears have been awarded a seventh-round compensatory pick, the NFL announced Thursday.
Technically, the Bears didn’t earn any compensatory picks. This seventh-rounder is what’s known as a “supplemental selection,” per the CBA, which is awarded when the number of compensatory selections is less than 32. They’re awarded in terms of draft order, so the Bears and Texans both get an additional seventh-round pick.
With the additional seventh rounder, Chicago now has nine draft picks ahead of free agency, including the No. 1 pick in the draft. That’s expected to change as the Bears are looking to trade out of the top spot and rack up additional picks as general manager Ryan Poles looks to retool what’s the NFL’s worst roster.
Where things stand, Chicago has picks in the first, second and third rounds, as well as two selections in each of the fourth, fifth and seventh rounds.
