Bears head coach Matt Nagy wasn’t at Halas Hall on Monday. But it wasn’t  because he was fired following a humiliating 38-3 loss to the Bucs.

Nagy announced that he has tested positive for COVID-19 via his Monday press conference via Zoom, and he will remain away from team facilities until further notice.

Nagy is vaccinated, which means he’ll need two negative tests 24 hours apart before he’ll be allowed to return to the team. That means he likely won’t be coaching this week against the 49ers on Sunday. He said no others have tested positive for COVID-19.

Special teams coordinator Chris Tabor will run team meetings in his absence, which will allow Sean Desai and Bill Lazor to focus on the defense and offense. This is part of the plan put in place before the start of the season.

Nagy joins a long list of Bears players and coaches who are on the reserve/COVID-19 list. Outside linebacker Robert Quinn, tight end Jimmy Graham, offensive tackle Elijah Wilkinson and linebacker Caleb Johnson, along with wide receivers coach Mike Furrey, are all on the list.

Running back Damien Williams was just removed from the COVID list on Saturday after missing last week’s game against the Packers.
