Bears fire GM Ryan Pace after 7 seasons

The Bears are cleaning house as GM Ryan Pace has been fired.

The Chicago Bears have fired general manager Ryan Pace after seven seasons, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

This comes with news that the Bears have also fired head coach Matt Nagy after four seasons, which was far from a shock. Nagy finished his Bears career with a 34-33 record, including both of Chicago’s playoff losses.

During Pace’s seven-year tenure as GM, the Bears went 48-67 and failed to win a playoff game in two appearances. While Nagy played a part during the last four years, Pace was also at fault.

Pace’s future was more of a question leading up to the offseason, especially given Chairman George McCaskey and President/CEO Ted Phillips preached collaboration between Nagy and Pace. The expectation was that if one went, the other would follow. And that’s what happened.

While there’s no denying Pace has an eye for talent during the draft process — as evidenced by some impressive selections in the later rounds — there’s more that goes into running a football team.

Now, the Bears will be searching for a new GM and head coach, and there could be more change if President/CEO Ted Phillips steps away from football operations.
