Bears claimed six players on waivers

The Bears have claimed six players on waivers, including former first-round OL Alex Leatherwood.

The Chicago Bears have claimed six players on waivers, according to the wire report.

The Bears have claimed offensive lineman Alex Leatherwood, nose tackle Armon Watts, defensive back Josh Blackwell, defensive end Kingsley Jonathan, linebacker Sterling Weatherford and tight end Trevon Wesco.

Leatherwood, a former first-round pick in 2021, started all 17 games in his rookie season, where he played both right tackle and right guard. We’ll see if the Bears give him a chance to play at his natural guard position.

Watts, a sixth-round selection in 2019, was a surprising cut by the Vikings on Tuesday. He was expected to be a starter along the defensive line. Last season, Watts had 5 sacks, 33 pressures and 10 QB hits with 9 starts.

Blackwell, an undrafted rookie out of Duke, played 52 snaps in the Eagles’ season finale, totaling three tackles in the loss.

Jonathan, another undrafted rookie, was an effective pass rusher at Syracuse. He appeared in 43 games over five seasons, where he totaled 100 tackles, 21.5 tackles for a loss, and 15 sacks with four passes defended.

Weatherford signed with the Colts as an undrafted free agent out of Miami (OH) had an impressive training camp, where he made plays all over the field.

Wesco, a former fourth-round pick in 2019, played in 40 games for the Jets over three seasons with six catches for 87 yards. He’s a tight end/fullback hybrid, not unlike Jake Tonges.
