If it’s down to the Chicago Bears or Washington Commanders for Caleb Williams, we have to get one thing straight: Both teams, presumably the frontrunners for Williams in the 2024 NFL draft, will likely have new offensive coordinators.
With the Commanders, it’s almost certain that Eric Bieniemy will need to find a new job after head coach Ron Rivera was fired on Monday. It’s highly unlikely Bieniemy would be promoted to head coach after a bad season in Washington.
It’s slightly less certain that the Bears will fire offensive coordinator Luke Getsy, if only because they seem inclined to keep head coach Matt Eberflus. Yet, it’s still more likely than not that Chicago will sack Getsy.
Bears Wire was not impressed with Getsy after Chicago’s loss to the Green Bay Packers on Sunday:
“#FireLukeGetsy. Need I say more? Getsy once again wasn’t prepared to face the Packers, did his best to take the ball out of Justin Fields’ hands and once again showed he’s incapable of making adjustments. Getsy has struggled as a play caller through his two seasons as Chicago’s head coach, but this should be his final game with the Bears. Whether or not that happens remains to be seen.”
When we discuss a good fit for Caleb Williams or any other top prospect, the whole picture needs to be evaluated. The owner, the front office, and the head coach are all important, but don’t forget the offensive coordinator. We have no idea who will be the offensive coordinator in either Washington or Chicago. So much of this picture is uncertain, which makes the next several weeks quite relevant to Caleb’s future in the NFL.
