It’s no secret that the Chicago Bears are in the midst of a rebuild. A rebuild that consists of new schemes all around; a rebuild that features arguably the worst roster in the league; a rebuild that isn’t about winning right now.
But for the players, like quarterback Justin Fields, all that matters is winning. So Fields’ frustration after a brutal 12-7 loss to the Washington Commanders is understandable.
For all the moral victories and progress, the losses are starting to add up for the Bears. And the frustration is wearing on Fields, who’s becoming impatient for these hard-fought performances to turn into wins.
“Everybody is feeling this way. Everybody is mad,” Fields said after the game. “I mean, nobody is happy about this loss. Just we always get told that we’re almost there, we’re almost there. Like me personally, I’m tired of being almost there. Tired of being just this close. Feel like I’ve been hearing it for so long now.
“At the end of the day all you can do is get back to works. That’s the only reaction you have. Live and you learn, and get back to next week and keep going, keep getting better.”

Fields is in a pivotal second season, where he has no help along the offensive line or at wide receiver. There have been notable hints of regression, a lack of trust, brutal hits and plenty of frustration.
After a 2-1 start to the season, Chicago has lost three straight games and is staring at a 2-4 record. Which, to be fair, was about what everyone on the outside was expecting.
As far as “almost being there” when it comes to what this team wants to accomplish, it’s fair to doubt if this team will get there this season. After all, if they do get “there,” it isn’t exactly a rebuild anymore, is it?
