Basketball Power Index gives Gators a narrow edge in rematch at Georgia

The Southeastern Conference men’s basketball schedule continues to roll along as the Florida Gators get set for a rematch with their former coach Mike White and the Georgia Bulldogs — this time inside Stegman Coliseum — on Saturday.

Using the College Basketball Power Index, ESPN predicts the winner and margin of every matchup in the country. According to Saturday’s projections, Florida has a 59.5% chance to win with an expected 2.7-point margin of victory. The game also earned a matchup quality rating of 86.4, giving it the seventh-highest mark on a day jammed-packed with college basketball action.

“BPI is a measure of team strength that is meant to be the best predictor of performance going forward,” the site reads. “BPI represents how many points above or below average a team is… Game predictions account for opponent strength, pace of play, site, travel distance, day’s rest and altitude, and are used to simulate the season 10,000 times to produce season projections.”

The game will be of the Quadrant 2 variety for Florida, which enters the matchup ranked No. 32 in the NET, while Georgia is also playing a Quad 2 game ranked No. 96 coming in.

Todd Golden and the Gators travel to Athens on Saturday, Feb. 17. Tipoff is slated for an early 1 p.m. start and the game will be broadcast on the SEC Network.
