Barksdale became the first African American to play for the U.S. Olympic basketball team in 1948, helping the team win a gold medal in London. Barksdale was signed by the NBA’s Baltimore Bullets in 1951 after the league started to integrate in 1950. Barksdale became the first African American to play in the NBA All-Star Game in 1953.
