Auburn corner [autotag]Roger McCreary[/autotag] seems to have found his niche as the NFL draft approaches.
A new mock by Touchdown Wire has McCreary going 56th overall (24th pick of the second round) to the Dallas Cowboys. McCreary is typically picked among the 50s in most mock drafts, as he is projected as a second-round talent amid what is considered a particularly deep cornerback class for the 2022 draft.
The Cowboys could certainly use McCreary’s services and skillset. Dallas’ No. 1 corner is All-Pro Trevon Diggs, but there are concerns that Diggs’ staggering 11 interceptions in 2021 could be unsustainable with how inconsistent he was in coverage play — PFF ranked Diggs 90th among all corners in yards per attempt and 68th in open target percentage among corners with 300 or more coverage snaps last year. Dallas could look to bolster its secondary with a more consistent cornerback at the position, which is where McCreary could come in. McCreary is a press-man corner whose potentially lockdown ability could negate the big splash plays that Dallas tended to give up.
McCreary was a star for Auburn. In his final year, McCreary was named to Reese’s Senior Bowl All-American team as well as PFF’s College all-SEC first team. He had 16 pass defenses and two interceptions in his final year on the Plains.
The NFL draft begins on Thursday, but the second round where McCreary is most commonly projected kicks off the day after on Friday.
