Auburn’s hosting chances improve by the day says D1Baseball

After three-straight weekends of solid play, Auburn may sneak their way back into host consideration.

It was just a month ago that Auburn left Tuscaloosa with a 6-1 loss to Alabama, which led to the Tigers’ third SEC series loss in four tries.

The very next weekend, the Tigers scored 24 runs over three games to win a crucial home series against Mississippi State. That series became a turning point for Auburn, as they have gone on a hot streak that most could have never dreamed of just a month ago.

Since the series loss at Alabama, the Tigers have won four straight series over two top-10-ranked teams in No. 9 South Carolina and No. 4 LSU, and most recently sweeping the defending national champion Ole Miss Rebels by outscoring the hometown squad, 37-11 and accumulating 50 hits over the weekend.

The recent hot streak has caught the attention of D1Baseball’s Mark Etheridge, who will now be turning his attention to this weekend’s series between Auburn and Missouri at Plainsman Park ($). With Missouri winning their two most recent series over Ole Miss and Georgia, Auburn will have a chance to change the postgame landscape.

Auburn and Missouri, a bit of an afterthought matchup a few weeks ago, now matches two of the hottest offenses in the sport. If Auburn has success, it can enter Hoover with a chance to win its way into a host spot.

Auburn’s postseason outlook has changed drastically over the last several weeks. The Tigers have improved eight spots in the latest RPI rankings since last week and have a respectable strength of schedule that ranks No. 7 in the country. The most recent Field of 64 projection from D1Baseball has Auburn traveling north to Storrs, Connecticut to compete as the No. 2 seed in a regional hosted by UConn.

A series win over Missouri, plus a multiple-day stay in Hoover could really turn Auburn’s postseason fate around.
