Athlon Sports recently outlined the top storylines to watch during Texas’ spring practices under first-year head coach Steve Sarkisian.
To no surprise, the quarterback competition between Hudson Card and Casey Thompson was the first storyline mentioned.
Quarterback Battle
What Athlon Sports says…
With Sam Ehlinger off to the NFL, Texas has one of the most intriguing quarterback battles in college football. Casey Thompson – a four-star recruit in the 2018 signing class – will battle Hudson Card for the No. 1 spot, with the outcome not expected to be decided until the fall. Thompson impressed as Ehlinger’s backup last season and delivered a standout performance in the second half of the Alamo Bowl by connecting on eight of 10 passes for 170 yards and four touchdowns. However, he’s far from settled as the No. 1 quarterback. Card ranked higher (No. 59) coming out of high school in the 2020 signing class and attempted three passes last fall. Sarkisian has two options he should feel good about going into ’21. Which quarterback will make a strong first impression?
What Longhorns Wire says…
Regardless of who wins the quarterback competition between Casey Thompson and Hudson Card, it appears that Texas will be in good hands. It’s a great ‘problem’ to have. Although Thompson may have the slight edge as spring practices kick off, after how Card has looked throughout practices, he could be the most prolific passer to come through the Forty Acres in over a decade. It’s a much closer battle than fans seem to think. If Card continues to impress with his accuracy and ball placement, he could solidify the starting role by the time fall camp begins.
