Are Colts in play to sign TE Evan Engram?

Could the Colts be the landing spot for free-agent TE Evan Engram?

There is no secret that the Indianapolis Colts need to add talent to the tight end position. Could that include pursuing New York Giants pending free agent Evan Engram?

A first-round pick with the Giants in 2017, Engram has flashed elite upside as a receiver. He hasn’t been able to put it all together, though, and his issues with concentration drops have plagued his career thus far.

But the Colts still may be looking to add that kind of talent and upside to the roster. Mike Garafolo said Friday on NFL Network’s “Good Morning Football” that the Colts could be eyeing the Ole Miss product.

“I heard Evan Engram might be in play in Indianapolis so keep an eye on that one,” said Garafolo on Friday morning.

While this isn’t an official report that the Colts are going for Engram—they have some interest in all players set to hit the market—the fit wouldn’t be a terrible one.

Engram’s career may not have taken off to the point where he’s made good on his first-round draft capital. But he has still provided flashes of upside that will make teams intrigued.

The Colts have a desperate need to add playmakers to their offense. Though it isn’t clear what direction they’ll go in after trading away quarterback Carson Wentz, they can’t afford to be uber-picky when it comes to adding talent.

The recent retirement of starter Jack Doyle also complicates matters while pending free agent Mo Alie-Cox has yet to be re-signed. The only tight end currently on the roster is Kylen Granson, who just finished his rookie season.

Regardless of who the Colts have under center, they need more explosive playmakers on offense. Engram can provide value if the Colts can keep him from committing the drive-killing drops he had in East Rutherford.

His size and speed make him a mismatch all over the field and if the Colts are able to take a one-year flier on Engram, it may not be a bad move.
