Appalachian State Mountaineers College Football Preview 2021: What Will Happen, Season Prediction
You know you’re doing something right when you win nine games including a 56-28 bowl blowout during a global pandemic and the season is a disappointment.
Such is life for an Appalachian State program that knew national championship level success in the FCS world and has known nothing but winning in the seven seasons since moving up.
Two Sun Belt titles, a perfect six-for-six in bowl games, and if Chase Brice – or one of the other quarterback options – is strong, this might be the program’s best team yet in the FBS era.
Ten starters are expected back to what should be the league’s best defense. More than eight starters are back on offense considering Corey Sutton – possibly the Sun Belt’s best wide receiver – is back after opting out last season.
But …
Set The Appalachian State Mountaineers Regular Season Win Total At … 9
The Sun Belt is a bear.
The Mountaineers have to deal with a high-powered East Carolina team to start, they go to Miami, and Marshall – who won last year 17-7 – is a problem. And that’s before getting to the conference slate.
With some due respect to Texas State, it would’ve been nice to miss someone else from the West. Going to Louisiana and Arkansas State is tough, going to Georgia State is harsh, and dealing with Coastal Carolina and Georgia Southern at home won’t be a picnic.
But it’s Appalachian State, so assume nine wins, a bowl victory, and a whole lot of very, very good games.
And with all the attention paid to other teams in the conference, assume the Mountaineers might take back the Sun Belt.
