Michigan football hasn’t had much of a problem retaining players, but one position group that was seen as extremely deep entering the 2022 season is becoming increasingly thin.
While the starting quarterback isn’t an issue for the Wolverines with J.J. McCarthy leading the charge, no longer does he have his primary competition. Last year’s starter, Cade McNamara, transferred to Iowa this offseason. Now another QB is in the NCAA transfer portal.
Having come aboard before the 2021 season, former Texas Tech starter Alan Bowman had the requisite experience the others on the roster didn’t have. But, he wasn’t able to supplant the aforementioned McNamara or get in the battle between McNamara and McCarthy this offseason. He’s opted to transfer, according to a report from the Detroit Free Press’ Rainer Sabin.

Bowman appeared in four games for the maize and blue in 2022, completing six of seven passes for 60 yards and a touchdown, after only appearing in three games a year ago.
With Bowman departing, and Michigan not having a committed 2023 quarterback in this year’s recruiting cycle, the Wolverines very well could go back to the portal to find an experienced backup. At the moment, Davis Warren, the former walk-on, is the backup, and he’s appeared in six games, having thrown nine passes with five completions for 89 yards.
Though Michigan has lost multiple players to the NCAA transfer portal: McNamara, tight end Erick All, and defensive tackle George Rooks, it has added former Arizona State offensive lineman LaDarius Henderson, and added an emerging former Nebraska linebacker as well.
