Despite signing Chase Edmonds and Raheem Mostert early in the offseason, the Miami Dolphins opted to bring in former Los Angeles Rams and New England Patriots running back Sony Michel earlier this month.
Michel brings a championship pedigree, with two Super Bowl victories in his career, and a different running style to an offense that’s pretty much built around speed.
That’s why head coach Mike McDaniel and general manager Chris Grier signed Michel to a one-year deal worth $1.75 million which is all accounted for in his cap hit. According to Over the Cap, $500,000 of Michel’s $1.16 million base salary is guaranteed, and he also receives $350,000 in a signing bonus and $240,000 in per-game roster bonuses.
If Michel were to be cut before the start of the season, the Dolphins would incur a dead cap hit of $850,000. His release would save just $900,000.
With this information, it seems likely that Michel makes the roster. It would probably take an extremely poor showing from the former Bulldog as well as a great performance from at least one of the lower backs on the depth chart such as Salvon Ahmed, ZaQuandre White or Gerrid Doaks.
