Alabama’s Nick Saban explains why LSU matchup is often so crucial

Beating Alabama last season ultimately sent LSU to Atlanta, and it could serve the same role again in 2023.

It’s Alabama week, and more often than not, it seems like LSU’s season is defined by this game.

It’s typically a matchup between ranked opponents, and the winner generally has the inside track to win the SEC West.

That was the case in 2022, and it could very well prove to be the case once again this season. Coach Nick Saban was asked why this game frequently carries such significance.

“They have really good players, they’re very competitive, they’ve always been well coached and this game has always had significance in the consequence of your season,” Saban said. “The first thing you’ve got to do is win your division, and that’s what we’re really trying to focus on, and you’ve got to get yourself ready to take care of business against really good players to be able to do that.

“I don’t know how many of the games we’ve played with them in the last 15 years or whatever that don’t have some consequence to what kind of season you have.”

The winner of this year’s game will once again become the favorite to win the division, though LSU would need some help in the form of an Ole Miss loss down the stretch even with a win.

Last year, this contest was the jumping-off point for a 10-win season in Year 1 under [autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag]. It likely has the chance to serve the same function once again in 2023.
