Alabama promotes former Washington tight ends coach to offensive coordinator

The Alabama Crimson Tide found their new offensive coordinator from within, promoting former Washington tight ends coach Nick Sheridan.

After former Washington Huskies offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb decided to leave Kalen DeBoer and the Alabama Crimson Tide for the Seattle Seahawks, DeBoer decided to hire his next offensive coordinator internally.

Washington’s former head coach brought the majority of his offensive coaching staff with him to Tuscaloosa, however, both Grubb and offensive line coach Scott Huff opted to stay in Seattle to join first-year head coach Mike Macdonald with the Seahawks. As DeBoer continues to put his staff together, he has tabbed tight ends coach Nick Sheridan to take over as the team’s offensive coordinator.

The former Michigan quarterback held the position at Indiana in 2020 and 2021 after DeBoer left the Hoosiers to take the head coaching job at Fresno State before rejoining him on Montlake in 2022. Under Sheridan, the Michael Penix Jr.-led group averaged 362.6 yards and 28.9 points per game in 2020, before dipping to 291.8 yards and 17.2 points in 2021 when Penix played just five games.

According to Ryan Fowler of Alabama radio station 100.9 The Game, former Washington wide receivers coach JaMarcus Shephard will share play-calling duties with Sheridan, who will have big shoes to fill. Under Grubb, Washington’s offense averaged 462.1 yards and 36 points per game during its run to the national championship.

With three former Huskies coming in, including center Parker Brailsford and wide receiver Germie Bernard, Sheridan will have some familiar faces to work with but has a big challenge ahead of him.
