On Monday afternoon, the Alabama basketball program announced the hiring of Preston Murphy as the special assistant to the head coach.
Crimson Tide head coach Nate Oats was served with the task of replacing all three of his assistant coaches this offseason after Bryan Hodgson, Antoine Pettway, and Charlie Henry each took head coaching jobs. With the hiring of Murphy, Oats has likely completed his coaching staff for the 2023-24 season.
Murphy graduated from Rhode Island in 1999 with a degree in finance. He scored 1,218 points for the Rams while playing in four straight postseasons, which included a run to the Elite Eight in 1998. He ranks among URI’s all-time leaders in three-point percentage, assists and steals.
Murphy spent four years as an assistant coach with the Creighton Bluejays, where he helped the Bluejays win 86 games, including two NCAA tournament berths. Prior to Creighton, he served several years in a variety of assistant coaching roles with Boston College and Rhode Island.
