AFC West standings update entering Week 3

A look at each AFC West team’s record heading into Week 3.

The Chargers saw their record fall to .500 after losing to the Chiefs last Thursday night.

But how about the others in the division?

Let’s take a look at the AFC West standings entering Week 3.

1. Chiefs (2-0)

Kansas City rallied late to beat Los Angeles, 27-24. While it wasn’t a spectacular performance from Patrick Mahomes, who finished with 235 yards and two touchdowns, the Chiefs’ turning point was when rookie cornerback Jaylen Watson picked off a Justin Herbert pass and returned it 99 yards for the score. The pick-six broke a 17-17 tie, and Kansas City never looked back.

2. Chargers (1-1)

All the momentum was on Los Angeles’ side, as it was controlling the time of possession and minimized Mahomes for the most part. However, there were too many errors and missed opportunities – including four should-have-been interceptions. In addition, injuries to offensive linemen Corey Linsley and Trey Pipkins caused the offense to take a tumble late, leading to Herbert’s rib injury.

Next up: vs. Jaguars (1-1)

3. Broncos (1-1)

The Broncos beat the Texans, despite an ugly performance from Russell Wilson and a poor coaching performance from Nathaniel Hackett. Wilson completed just 45% of his passes and struggled to get Denver’s offense in sync. In the first half, the Broncos got inside Houston’s two-yard line on two different possessions and failed to get a touchdown both times. Another blunder occurred in the second quarter when they took a delay of game on a 54-yard field goal attempt. Instead of trying from 59 yards, Hackett decided to punt. Ultimately, Denver’s defense bailed them out, sacking Davis Mills three times while holding the Texans to just nine points.

Next up: vs. 49ers (1-1)

4. Raiders (0-2)

For the first time, the Raiders lost a game they led by 20 or more points when they blew a 20-0 halftime lead and fell to the Cardinals 29-23 in overtime. After gaining just 86 yards in the first half, Arizona gained 327 yards in the second half. Meanwhile, for Las Vegas, after gaining 258 yards through the first two quarters, it picked up just 66 yards in the second half. The game-sealer was when Isaiah Simmons forced the fumble on Hunter Renfrow, leading to Byron Murphy picking up the ball and taking it the other way for a 59-yard touchdown.
