AFC East news: Patriots CB Stephon Gilmore positive for COVID-19

New England Patriots CB and former Buffalo Bills, cornerback Stephon Gilmore, tests positive for COVID-19.

Like the Tennessee Titans, another team has backtracked after a few good days in terms of COVID-19 test results. That additional organization is the New England Patriots, and the latest news involves former Bills cornerback Stephon Gilmore.

According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, Gilmore has tested positive for coronavirus on Wednesday.

Gilmore’s positive test comes just days after the Patriots had to play the Kansas City Chiefs on Monday without their starting quarterback, Cam Newton, who tested positive for the coronavirus last week. Kansas City won the game, 26-10, and in Week 5, the Patriots are scheduled to host the Denver Broncos at 4:25 p.m. on Sunday.

As of Monday, Newton was asymptomatic and the soonest he could reportedly return to the Patriots’ facility would have been Thursday. In addition to Newton, practice squad defensive tackle Bill Murray was placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list.

ESPN reports that the Patriots have team facilities currently shutdown following the news of Gilmore’s positive test.

The NFL has yet to announce any updates to Week 5’s matchups between the Patriots-Broncos and Bills-Titans. Buffalo’s game is already seeing speculation that it might go down as a forfeit for Tennessee.
