AFC coach thinks Joe Burrow would be drafted before Trevor Lawrence

Would Joe Burrow be drafted ahead of Trevor Lawrence?

We are now six days away from the 2021 NFL Draft. Like most years, everyone is losing their minds over prospect rankings, and of course – which quarterback is the next Patrick Mahomes.

There’s been a healthy debate brewing regarding where former LSU Tigers QB Joe Burrow would be drafted in this year’s class.

Which quarterback would Jacksonville select with the first overall draft pick?

Would LSU’s Joe Burrow go first overall? Would Clemson’s Trevor Lawrence go first overall?

Let me be clear here – there is absolutely no doubt that Trevor Lawrence will be drafted first overall next Thursday night.

He has been the best quarterback prospect in this year’s class since coming out of high school. Lawrence has elite physical traits and plays the position the way NFL teams desire. He has shown to be a winner on the field and a leader off of it.

Jacksonville would be crazy to not select Lawrence. He will be the pick when round one begins six days from tonight.

However, at least one NFL coach in the AFC believes that Joe Burrow would be the better option if he were in this draft class and not last years’ draft class.

NFL.com’s Tom Pelissero recently published an article on NFL.com sharing thoughts, quotes, and breakdowns on 13 quarterbacks in the 2021 NFL draft class.

When discussing Clemson’s Trevor Lawrence, one anonymous AFC quarterback coach told Pelissero that he would take Joe Burrow over Trevor Lawrence, “100 times out of 100.”

“I don’t know if he’s a generational talent like people are saying,” the anonymous quarterbacks coach said.

“He (Lawrence) does not have unique, rare playmaking ability,” he continued. “If I’m comparing last year to this year, Joe Burrow is picked over Trevor Lawrence 100 times out of 100.”

At the end of the day, if over the next 15 years both the Bengals and Jaguars have winning seasons and make continuous playoff appearances. I don’t think either team will be complaining about which quarterback they drafted.

Nevertheless, it’s still a fun debate to have.
