To absolutely no surprise whatsoever, the 2023 college football season will be headlined by multiple stories concerning Texas A&M. Still, nothing will match the coverage of Head coach Jimbo Fisher’s coaching “hot seat” and just how high the thermometer will go in the midst of the pivotal 2023 campaign.
Earlier this week, CBS writer Dennis Dodd listed his “23 things for Spring” concerning some of the biggest stories in college football ahead of spring football this April, and for the Aggies, the focus remained on Jimbo Fisher’s future with the program, and just how risky is was to hire the controversial, but accomplished Bobby Petrino as the new offensive coordinator, while retaining defensive coordinator D.J. Durkin for the coming season. Dodd briefly described Fisher’s impending future as so:
The buyout goes down by $9 million, which still might not allow monied Aggies boosters to make a move if there is a repeat of 2022. At least the coordinators (D.J. Durkin, Bobby Petrino) have never faced any controversy in their careers.
This a little tongue-in-cheek from Dennis Dodd, but here’s the bottom line: Jimbo Fisher believes that the bulk of his historic 2022 recruiting class who avoided the transfer portal mixed with critical returners on offense and defense will yield incredible results on the field, and even though controversy does surround both Durkin and Petrino, if they don’t deliver as a collective unit in 2023, no one is safe in the future.
