After rattling off consecutive 1,000-yard seasons at Tulane, running back Makhi Hughes entered the transfer portal on Friday and appears destined for a Power Four program.
Per On3’s Pete Nakos, the Colorado Buffaloes, Ole Miss Rebels and Duke Blue Devils are three early teams to watch in Hughes’ transfer recruitment. Running back is a position of need for Colorado, which averaged only 2.6 yards per rush during the regular season.
Hughes missed his first college season in 2022 due to injury before tallying 1,378 rushing yards and seven touchdowns in 2023. As a redshirt sophomore this past season, he finished with 1,401 rushing yards and 15 TDs. One of his better performances came in Week 2 against Kansas State when he recorded 128 rushing yards, 37 receiving yards and one touchdown.
247Sports also linked Hughes to the Buffs. Here’s what 247Sports recruiting analyst Brad Crawford wrote on Colorado potentially landing Hughes:
Deion Sanders and Colorado haven’t been as active this portal cycle compared to the last two winter windows in recruiting, instead choosing a more selective game plan. Hughes fits the model of high-end players offensively that Sanders could be looking for, however. Isaiah Augustave led Colorado in rushing this season with 373 yards, so the Buffaloes could use more balance offensively in 2025 with Shedeur Sanders and Travis Hunter heading to the NFL.
