Shaka Smart’s Texas squad was shockingly upset by No. 14 Abilene Christian in the first round of the 2021 NCAA Tournament.
After not winning a single tournament game in six seasons, Smart eventually left Austin to accept the same role at Marquette. Texas athletic director Chris Del Conte was able to land Texas Tech’s Chris Beard as the next head basketball coach on April 1.
It didn’t take long for Abilene Christian head coach Joe Golding to poke fun at Beard. On Friday, Golding tweeted Beard to seek a rematch with Texas in early December.
Hey @CoachBeard__UT if you guys want a REMATCH you know how to get a hold of me. We have an open date in early December to open our new facility! We will even pay for your hotels and pizza after the game.

We’re certain that Texas won’t need Abilene Christian to foot the expenses in terms of the hotel and dinner after the contest. However, it’s actually an intriguing non-conference opponent for the Longhorns.
This could be a great way for Beard to kick off his tenure in Austin on a high note, but it’s unclear at this time if the offer on the table will materialize.
