The series between the New York Giants and the Washington Football Team dates all the way back to 1932 — Washington’s first year in the NFL. While many people talk about the rivalry between Washington and Dallas, the Giants are the WFT’s oldest rival.
New York leads the all-time series, 105-69-4, in 177 meetings. The Giants have won the previous five meetings. A combined four points decided the two games last season. The first meeting ended when Washington coach Ron Rivera decided to go for a two-point conversion with around 30 seconds remaining rather than kick the extra point and play for overtime.
Two years ago, the two teams faced one another in late December with nothing on the line but the No. 2 overall pick in the 2020 NFL draft and Chase Young. Both teams won. The Giants won the game, Washington won the sweepstakes.
The two teams have combined for 38 NFC East titles and 13 NFL championships. They have combined to win seven Super Bowls.
There have been many famous games in this rivalry. The final game of the 2016 season, as the Giants had already wrapped up a playoff spot and sat many of their starters. Washington, with all its starters, struggled behind quarterback Kirk Cousins.
Then, you can’t forget the infamous Gus Frerotte headbutt game. The Nov. 1997 game was terrible, ending in a forgettable 7-7, but no one will forget Frerotte’s headbutt.
Regardless of whether these teams are battling for the NFC East title — or last place — it’s always a heated battle between two franchises that do not like one another.
